In recent years there has been a global shift away from incineration toward
alternative treatment methods for health care risk waste. Alternatives to incineration
are well established in the USA, Europe, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan, Australia and
New Zealand. Steam-based technologies such as steam sterilization and autoclaving have
gained ground worldwide.
The move away from incineration has been the result of a number of factors, particularly
the emergence of cleaner technologies, international guidelines and public opposition
to incineration.
Worldwide, environmental activist non-governmental organizations are committed to
opposing the establishment of new incinerators and there has been a global call for active
investigation and implementation of cleaner waste treatment and disposal methods.
