Every healthcare facility should have at least one dedicated healthcare risk waste (HCRW) central storage area (CSA) serving as an interface from where the service provider will collect the HCRW for offsite treatment and disposal. The CSA must have sufficient capacity to accommodate the waste volumes generated by the facility as well as allowance should HCRW volumes increase.

According to SANS 10248- 1:2008, every healthcare facility must have a clearly demarcated area in which to store their waste prior to collection. A sign is required at the entrance indicating that it is a healthcare risk waste storage area.
