How On-Site Waste Management by Compass Makes the Difference

Maintaining Cintocare’s
5-Star Green Rating

Cintocare, Africa’s first green, 5-star-rated hospital, required a dedicated partner to manage all waste streams—healthcare risk waste (HCRW), sharps, and general waste—while upholding stringent environmental standards. From day one, Compass stepped in with an on-site solution that ensures cost efficiency, compliance, and sustainability. By placing a trained HCRW Supervisor and a General Worker on-site, Compass relieves much of the administrative burden for Cintocare, which in turn allows hospital staff to focus on patient care.

The Challenge

    1. Sustainability & Compliance
Cintocare prides itself on high environmental standards, proven by its 5-star green rating. They wanted to maintain and even enhance this status through best-practice waste segregation and responsible disposal methods.

    1. Efficient Daily Operations
The hospital needed a partner that could streamline waste tasks—including ordering supplies, scheduling collections, and providing ongoing staff training. Minimising day-to-day management overhead was a key objective.

  1. Managing Costs & Redirecting Waste
While outsourcing can sometimes be seen as more expensive, Cintocare recognised that correct waste segregation—along with an on-site solution—could ultimately reduce landfill volumes and help manage long-term disposal costs.

The Risks

  • Undermining the 5-Star Green Rating
Any slip in handling medical or general waste could threaten Cintocare’s reputation and environmental credentials.

  • Excessive Administrative Load
Without adequate on-site support, clinical supervisors would need to juggle tasks like ordering stock and waste pickup scheduling themselves.

  • Compliance Shortfalls
Improper waste segregation or missing documentation could lead to costly penalties or negative audit findings

Compass’s Intervention

On-Site Compass Roles

  • HCRW Supervisor:

A trained Compass employee who oversees all healthcare risk waste tasks—from collecting bins in the wards to managing sharps in doctors’ rooms.
  • General Worker:

Another Compass team member who focuses on on-site recycling and general waste management, supporting Cintocare’s facility-wide sorting and separation practices.

These two roles are employed by Compass. The rest of the hospital’s waste-related staff remain under Cintocare’s employment, which helps preserve existing structures while providing targeted expertise where it’s most needed.
  1. Separation & Recycling Space

Cintocare invested in a dedicated area within the hospital, complete with clearly labeled bins for different types of waste. The Compass General Worker ensures correct separation at source, helping reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill.

  2. Reusable Sharps Containers

To support the hospital’s 5-star green status, Compass deploys Daniels reusable sharps containers. After incineration of the contents, each container is thoroughly disinfected and reused, dramatically cutting down on single-use plastic waste.

  3. Ongoing Training & Stock Management

The HCRW Supervisor handles essential tasks such as ordering new containers, arranging collections, and offering informal training (often in the worker’s native language). This consistent guidance promotes compliance and safer handling practices across the hospital.

The Results

  • Continued 5-Star Green Rating
By focusing on source separation and using reusable sharps containers, Cintocare maintains its prestigious environmental credentials and demonstrates leadership in sustainable healthcare.
  • Reduced Waste to Landfill
Correct segregation has significantly cut the volume of general waste heading to landfill.
  • Lower Administrative Burden
With two dedicated Compass employees on-site, Cintocare staff can devote more time to patient care. Tasks like reordering supplies, coordinating waste pickups, and everyday supervision are managed by Compass’s on-site team.
  • Future Cost Benefits
The combination of correct segregation and reusable sharps containers will ultimately yield cost savings. Hospital supervisors also see value in not having to micromanage waste operations.
  • Enhanced Safety & Compliance
With continuous informal training from the HCRW Supervisor and General Worker, Cintocare’s staff are better informed about proper disposal methods, reducing needle-stick risks, and ensuring that the hospital remains audit-ready.
